UBO is a French University, with “mixed” research institutes, composed of University scientists/lecturers/professors and CNRS researchers. Research funding is thus provided for in roughly equal parts by the French ministry of Education and Research (MENRT) to the university and by the National Institute of Earth and Space Sciences (INSU) to the CNRS staff. The mixed research unit in marine geosciences (UMR 6538 Domaines Oceaniques) is located at the IUEM (Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer) in Plouzané since the mid 1990’s. The main fields of research of this institute are; Geochemistry, Sedimentology, Marine Geophysics and Structural Geology. Within Marine Geophysics one of the strong points is the Centre for acquisition and processing of seismic data. With the recent purchase of 5 OBS, partner 5 has recently participated in monitoring the aftershocks of the Great NW Sumatra earthquake (M9.0) of 2004 (July 2005, R/V Marion Dufresne).
Role of the Partner:
