Partnership Description:

XISTOS Development stems from Computer Science Laboratory of Paris 6 (Lip6) of University Pierre and Marie Curie. XISTOS was created as a startup and responds to specific objectives: finalisation, industrialisation and marketing of research activities within university laboratories. Thus XISTOS Development has been supported by the University 2000 funding and ANVAR (national fund for research) before raising funds to market its products. XISTOS Development activities relate primarily to the development of simulators for training and decision-making in situations of natural and industrial disasters. Simultaneously, XISTOS Development proposes other activities such as: collection of experts’ reports; knowledge databases; users’ needs databases; conceptual knowledge modelling and computer knowledge modelling. The developers of XISTOS Development mainly come from the Computer Science Laboratory of Paris 6 (LIP6). XISTOS Development continues the activity of research and development that the laboratory has been carrying out for several years. This activity led to the publication of a number of scientific articles on disasters management and to the creation NEAREST Project – sub-priotity 1.1.6.3-IV2.2 37 of data-processing simulators: Simulator – Earthquake; Simulator - Oil Fire; Simulator – Flood; Simulator - Terrorist Attack. XISTOS Development realises simulators to be used by public and industrial executives for
training and decision-making purposes. We need such tools beacause: (i) Disasters place decision-makers in a contradictory situation. (ii) Disasters do not happen often enough for administration and industrial executives to get real training on the field but yet they happen often enough to make natural and industrial hazards prevention a priority for public and private decision leaders. These simulators aim to: - limit the impact of disasters; - protect and improve the value of the company or the authority of the institution . In this spirit, XISTOS Development has conceived simulation tools to attain a double objective:
(a) train decision-makers to the management of disasters; (b)  support decisionmaking in a worsening situation.
In case of crisis, events happen so fast that it is too late to prepare an appropriate response if you are not already trained to do so. Executives and decision-makers in public  institutions (fire department, civil security, local and federal administrations), industries classified SEVESO (industries involving substances considered dangerous for man and the environment, i.e. oil or chemicals depots) and insurance companies, will be able to work together with the same tool for training and decision-making. When the frequency of disasters is low, a simulator provides a productive low-cost tool to support training and decision-making.
Without the occurrence of a disaster, such a tool can be used daily: (1) as a decentralised managing tool for any  event relating to security and environment; (2) as a centralized managing tool for these events; (3) in decision-making training courses; (4) in crisis management and real-time decision-making.
When a disaster does occur, the tool adapts itself to offer functionalities of diagnosis, anticipation and synthesis to provide its users with consistent and updated information to take decisions on how to manage the disaster.
Furthermore, a sophisticated tool able to simulate the occurrence, the course and the consequences of a disaster provides invaluable information to build a knowledge database.

Role of the Partner:

XISTOS will develop the simulator required to test the tsunami detection methodologies and the simulator of the interface for Civil Protection Authorities.
