Partnership Description:

The Alfred Wegener Institute is a large research centre mainly operating in polar and marine regions. The institute was established as a public foundation in 1980. The Foundation Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research includes the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, the Postdam Research Unit (1992), the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland and the Wadden Sea Station Sylt. It is a member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (HGF). The Alfred Wegener Institute conducts research in the Arctic, the Antarctic and at temperate latitudes. It coordinates polar research in Germany and provides both the necessary equipment and the essential logistic back up for polar expeditions. Recent additional research themes include North Sea research, contributions to marine biological monitoring, marine pollution research, investigation of naturally occurring marine substances and technical marine developments. Within geophysical research the institute has a well-accepted expertise in conducting standard marine geophysical experiments including the deployment of ocean bottom seismometers. Within the year 2005, the Alfred Wegener Institute received national funds to build up a complete new instrument pool for marine broadband ocean bottom seismometers (BB-OBS). These instruments will be made available for the proposed project on the base of a refund of the operational costs.

Role of the Partner:

AWI will be the leader of the work package related to the seismological monitoring of tsunami source area offshore SW Iberia by ocean bottom seismometers.
